The French Presidency of the European Union that will begin in January 2022 is currently being prepared by the government. Two committees are gathered for this purpose. The Cross-Party Monitoring Committee for the Preparation of the French Presidency of the European Union (Comité de suivi transpartisan pour la préparation de la Présidence française de l’Union européenne), gathering national and European members of parliament as well as representatives of local authorities under the chairmanship of the State Secretary for European Affair, met for the first time on 1st March 2021. This committee will enable the government to regularly consult the French political forces about their priorities for Europe.

In parallel, the State Secretary for European Affairs will kick-start a Reflection Committee on the challenges of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union (Comité de réflexion sur les enjeux de la Présidence française du Conseil de l’Union européenne) on Friday 5th March 2021. Chaired by the political scientist Thierry Chopin, this committee will gather twelve leading figures from academia, specialised in different fields. Its members are tasked with making proposals pertaining to the main directions of the French Presidency.
