International law, the story goes, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">was<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">indifferent<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to using force.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Reality<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as it stems from historical sources, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">however, appears much more complex. Using tools of history, sociology, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">anthropology and social psychology, this monograph offers new insights <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">into the history of the prohibition of the use of force in international law. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Conducting in-depth analysis of nineteenth-century doctrine and State <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">practices, it paves the way for an alternative narrative on the prohibition <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of force and seeks to understand the origins of international law<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">s trad<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">itional account. In so doing, it also provides a more general re<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">fl<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ection on <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">how the discipline writes, rewrites and chooses to remember its own hi<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">story.<\/span><\/strong><br role=\"presentation\" \/><br role=\"presentation\" \/><em><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Agatha Verdebout <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">holds a PhD in Public International Law from the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Universit\u00e9 Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Her main research interests lie in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">critical histories of international law and the use of force.
