[CONFERENCE] Sabine Weiland @ GLOBALGOALS Symposium, 10-11 June 2020, Utrecht

Sabine Weiland will present a paper titled “Managing complexity: Integrated food governance in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” at the GLOBALGOALS International SDG Research Symposium, to be held on 10 and 11 June 2020. Due to the current Corona crisis, the conference might be held online.

In 2015, the international community adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals with 169 targets as part of a global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The ambition expressed in these goals is unprecedented, the Agenda aims at ‘Transforming Our World’. But can this prominent example of global goal setting, as a new approach in global governance, help resolve the pressing challenges of economic development, poverty eradication, social justice, and global environmental protection? How can ‘global governance through goals’ be effective – and under which conditions? The 2020 SDG Research Symposium provides a forum for the exchange of cutting-edge research and policy studies on this question.

In her paper “Managing complexity: Integrated food governance in the UN Sustainable Development Goals”, Sabine Weiland focusses on the 17 SDGs which are integrated, i.e. they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. The analysis focusses on integrated solutions in the realm of food. The latter feature prominently in many of the SDGs because food is interconnected with various aspects of economy, environment and society – from hunger and malnutrition, to desertification, loss of biodiversity, to overconsumption, obesity and public health. The paper focusses on the notion of sustainability-oriented policy coherence and integration, i.e. questions of how to identify, understand and manage complexity and interactions among highly interconnected SDGs.
